Contempt of Cop

June 24th, 2010

A former Army SF trooper posted the following at Warrior Talk:

” ‘cop hater’ – anyone noticing the institutional corruption of civilian law enforcement.

To compare “police academy” to BUDS, SFAS, Ranger School, or similar program shows a complete ignorance of those programs…. See More

We learn by failure. When a wise negotiator/salesman does not get the deal closed, he reviews his techniques to determine how to do better.

If a negotiator succeeded every time, he’d assume his technique was sound.

But in all LE interactions with their fellow citizens, there is the unspoken threat of force.

Cop: “Please move over there, as I do not want witnesses to my actions” Citizen: “No thank you, I will remain here.”

Cop: “Please move over there” (or a will bash you with my night stick, taze you, or even shoot you and have 6 of my buddies swear you attacked me). Citizen: “Yes Sir.”

The cop probably thinks he’s great at “managing” people. But change the dynamics and he finds the badge, gun, and threat of force (legitimate or not) were his only negotiating tools.

My best friend’s mom was the first female prison guard in CA. She could not go toe to toe with inmates in physical strength or ego. She rarely had any problems because she brought no ego for the inmates to clash with.

Compelling people to obedience through force is not leadership, and is a type of conditioning that is antithetical to motivational leadership.”

Another gem from said poster…..

“It is when the administrator of implied force steps beyond their “legitimate” authority, or exercises that authority in an arbitrary and capricious manner, that they earn contempt. To the petty and vindictive, that contempt reinforces the “us versus them” mentality, motivating those with some power to “get them” or “show them who is boss” which earns them further contempt. When the conflict reaches crisis, and the “victim” has no confidence in his ability to petition his grievance, he takes desperate measures. When enough people agree, there is revolt.

I do not resent being pulled over and ticketed for speeding, when I was in fact speeding. I resent a MCSO officer pulling me over – and lying – claiming I was swerving and crossing over the divider multiple times, and then pretending he was doing me a favor by not ticketing me for something I didn’t do. I further resent a “system” that will take the word of a lying punk with a badge over my own. When my rights are trampled by my neighbor, I have recourse. When I am assailed by a criminal, I have recourse. When the criminal wears a badge, I am helpless. Who, therefore, should I rationally fear?

Psychological experiments have demonstrated time and again when one person is given arbitrary authority over another (or a group with authority over another group) that those in power rapidly abandon any principles of fair play they may have claimed to previously have. This process is rapidly accelerated when there is affirmation from peers and supervisors that the behavior is acceptable. That is why I do not believe for a moment the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuses went on without the knowledge and tacit consent of the commanders, nor for a moment believe the actions of an individual LEO are not well known and tacitly approved by his FTO, SGT, and LT. In these cases – one guy does something out of line. He notices that it is not immediately reprimanded. So he does it again. Others notice this new “acceptable” behavior and the cycle continues.”

Jordan Page – Live Acoustic Set @ LNC 2010

June 21st, 2010

Jordan Page came to the Libertarian National Convention to show his support for real libertarian values by backing Ernie on his bid for LNC Chair. One of the keynotes speakers was Bob Barr, and plenty of us are sick and tired of the neocon invasion… James Babb set up a congruent gathering in the hotel bar called “Bar Not Barr – I’d Rather Be Drinking.”  We gathered around, had a few drinks with some good folks and listened to a live set by Jordan Page. The first track is a real treat, its a revisited version of “Pendulum,” updated with the happenings of the last few years. As the set went on and the crowd increased, so did the ambient noise… but I’m including all of the songs for your enjoyment.

Federal Reserve Comic Books

May 21st, 2010

Yesterday, when checking the mail, my heart stopped for a few seconds. Large yellow envelope from the Federal Reserve are not something I typically see in my mailbox.

Letters from the Fed?

Letters from the Fed?

After seeing those envelopes, I instantly thought “Oh man.. WTF did I do this time?”  When my stomach finished turning over, I remembered that I was actually EXPECTING something from the Federal Reserve. A couple of weeks ago I read an article on Reason.com and found out that the Federal Reserve actually publishes “educational” comic books to help kids “learn” about our fractional reserve scam system.

Group shot of the comic books.

Group shot of the comic books.

After reading through a few of these, the propaganda clouds your mind like a funk laden mystery container of food in your refrigerator.  The level of indoctrination and brain washing by the omnipotent state is scary, but when they target the nation’s youth, it feels like programming from our masters. I was originally going to post summaries of each one, but I changed my mind. Instead, I scanned each of them and you can look at them for yourself :)

I’ve uploaded them in CBZ format which requires the free comic book viewing program, Comical. It is available for Windows, OSX and Linux, so everyone should be covered. You can grab the application here.

None of the comics have any mention of a copyright, so there shouldn’t be any issues. Click on the images below to be taken to the download location.

The only thing I ask of people is this:  If you make a parody, review, praise or chastise these comics, let me know so I can see what you did with them :)

Windows Mobile programs you need

February 18th, 2010

My favorite daily use program is called Kinoma.  Kinoma can be used as a generic media player, but more importanly, it has access to every single radio station that is on Shoutcast!  Do you live in an area where you can’t get your favorite talk radio shows over the air? Chances are that they are available on Shoutcast.  They have a paid version, but I have never used it… the free one does everything I need.

Happy Birthday America

July 3rd, 2009

On the way to work this morning, my local NPR affiliate played a choice selection of dialogue… they had people read the Declaration of Independence in its entirety. From the first words uttered, I had goose bumps. Our nation today is going through a lot of trials and tribulations and these injustices are on par with, at times surpassing, where our forefathers drew the proverbial line in the sand.

King George was accused of “erect[ing] a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance.”

He was also held accountable “For depriving us in many cases, of the benefit of Trial by Jury” and “For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent.”

However, I feel one of the most important accusations within is that of “abolishing our most valuable Laws and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments.”

233 years ago, the founding fathers’ most valuable laws may not have been the same as our most valuable laws today. But, without their perseverence and steadfast resolve, I would not be able to write my opinion down. I would not be able to rally a cry of revolution. I would not be able to hold our overlords accountable for the repeated injustices they have committed against their people.

The real judgement day is coming. I’m not talking about fairy tales from ancient books, I’m talking about they day we judge you! Your refusal to do what is right for our great country is your greatest offense.

Now is the time for you to change your ways and return to the ideals this country was founded upon. Read the words of our treasured documents. Those that wrote the words that changed world were wise, pay attention and change your ways before it is too late. Follow the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Stop taking our natural rights and replacing them with collective rights or priveleges. Stop violating our human nature. We can speak our of turn, we can yell in the streets, we can gather to discuss your demise, and more importantly, we have the right to follow through with it.

Outlook Email Tagging & Windows Desktop Search

March 31st, 2009

Inundated with tasks and email at work and completely frustrated by the company mandated use of Outlook/Exchange, I went looking for a tagging solution to make my Outlook behave a bit more like gmail and a bit less like a paper filing cabinet. Strolling through the web, I quickly found Taglocity which seems to be fitting the bill nicely.

Taglocity adds tagging of emails to Outlook. Still confined to the Exchange servers model, it does what it can. I’ve been using it for about 5 hours and have already cleared my inbox and tagged every single email I deemed worthy of saving. I’m not quite sure why it forces you to share your tags on their website, but I really could care less. I don’t have time to search for another solution and retag again, so hopefully this works.

Upon installing Taglocity, you are forced to install the Windows Desktop Search, which is fine with me. It seems nice as well… and at this point, I’m jumping all over anything that might make myself more productive or my day a bit easier.

Being in a corporate environment (that is stuck in the 90s), I frequently use mapped network drives. The standard Windows Desktop Search does not index files on UNC paths. Microsoft has a solution for that as well; enter Windows Destkop Search: Add-in For Files on Microsoft Networks.

I’d say that I would update this with how things work out… but I know I won’t… unless something fails miserably. All in all, I’m really quite surprised at easy this daunting task was completed.

Adding non-indexed network shares to Windows 7 Libraries

March 25th, 2009
  1. Create a permanent directory: C:\Shares
  2. Create temporary directories in C:\Shares for each network location you want added to a library, i.e. C:\Shares\MP3s
  3. Add the new directories to the corresponding libraries using Windows Explorer (Need to figure out how to do this with Power Shel)
  4. Delete the temporary directories (do not delete C:\Shares, just the other directories in there)
  5. Launch an elevated priveledges command prompt by running cmd.exe as an administrator
  6. Use mklink.exe to create a symbolic link, ie “mklink /d C:\Shares\MP3s \\server\MP3s”

Weird tamales

March 11th, 2009

Last weekend, I went home to Illinois to visit my family and attend my brother’s graduation from pharmacy school. When my bro picked me up from the airport, we were determined to eat something a little different than the obligatory Chicago style hotdogs or Italian Beef sandwiches.

We were on the south side and remembered a little shanty that Anthony Bourdain visited in a recent episode of “No Reservations”. We ended up at the nameless shack in hopes of scoring the Mother In Law sandwich which was supposed to be composed of a sausage and a tamale on a bun covered in chili. We found a place that had a Mom In Law on the menu, so we ordered it up. It was not the sandwich we anticipated, but it was good none the less.

This concoction was a couple of tamales in a styrofoam cup covered with chili.

And yes, we paid for it all night too.

Picture of Sagan

March 11th, 2009

We got a new dog back in December. His name is “Carl Sagan likes to say ‘Billions and billions of stars’”. He was a pound dog, but really smart. He came from the factory knowing how to sit, stay, shake and fetch. Since then, we’ve taught him to speak, kiss, down, crawl and my dad’s favorite trick “easy” (which mean taking a treat very gently). This is a good picture of him and it shows his expressive ears… those things are like little satellite dishes rotating every which way. He’s a character… a hyper character, but he’s ours.

Sam Adams’ Black Lager

March 2nd, 2009

blacklagerYesterday, I went out shooting and decided I was going to pick up some decent beer. I’m a huge fan of beer, but I’m not professional critic.

Over the next few days, I’m going to post my initial thoughts about several craft brews, imports and small brewery beers that I have never tried before.

First up is the Black Lager from Sam Adams. This is a fantastic beer. I love Sam Adams and what they’ve done to help me discover good beer. I’ve never had a Sam Adams beer that wasn’t delicious, and this is another prime example of fantastic brew.

It’s quite dark, obviously. In a clear glass, you can’t see through it. It’s not over powering yet has a nice bitter/sweet bite with nearly no aftertaste.  It kind of reminds me of a New Castle but with a slightly smokey and chocolaty aroma.

Great beer.

The Squeezebox Boom is SO cool!

March 2nd, 2009

963810 The Squeezebox Boom is one of the coolest gadgets I’ve come across in recent memory. They typically run around $250 and I’ve had my eye on it since they came out a few years ago.

This weekend I went by Circuit City to check out their wares and see if there was anything left of value. They had one Boom remaining and I grabbed it up for $90. What a deal.

I knew that it was an internet connected radio, but I really didn’t know the power that it had. It can connect directly with a number of internet streaming radio services like last.fm, pandora.com and slacker.com.

The best way to describe this thing is to think about XM or Sirius satellite radio. With those services, you have to pay a monthly fee and get a few dozen radio stations. When hooking this up to Pandora or Slacker, you get all of the benefits of a satellite radio system without a monthly fee AND you can skip songs! That’s right, you can skip songs. It’s simply amazing.

One of the other features I’m messing with currently is utilizing it’s built in ability to stream podcasts. I have it set up so that ESPN’s Thundering Herd with Colin Cowherd is one of my channels. I also have a folder of NPR favorites so I can hear the latest bits from the radio… sans commercials.

It also has the ability to stream music from your home PC, but I haven’t even messed with that yet.

The built in amp and speakers are not astounding but far exceeded my expectations. It is decently loud and very simple to use.

I wish they had more of them in stock because I’d LOVE to have one of these in the kitchen and in the garage. I may look into getting a Squeezebox Duet from them… but they were a little more expensive and require a stereo and speaker setup to use

Highly recommended.

This just in, Arby’s is gross

February 26th, 2009

arbysroastburgerFor some strange reason today, my coworker decided it would be a good idea to go to Arby’s for lunch. Not having been there for quite a while, I was intrigued. I wasn’t in the mood for our standard sushi fare and anything mega-greasy was right out. Their food is just expensive… and gross.

In fear of being raped by the cash register, I went online and found some coupons before our trek. I figured I would just get their chicken salad sandwich. It’s the only thing on their menu that I enjoy. It has grapes and walnuts in it, just like my mom used to make… but it’s $7.00 for a damn sandwich and no coupon to be found.

When we got there they had a sign up in the window advertising their new sandwich, the “Roast Burger”. It sounded interesting and looked decent on the picture. Now, being a veteran of all things fast food, I should know better than to go by the pictures they have rigged to look tasty… but I didn’t. I ordered it.

I should have known something was off when I had my sandwich in hand a mere 30 seconds after ordering it. I was still waiting around for the other office orders to be completed… I stood there for a few minutes and then decided to inspect the roast beast.

It was beastly. Room temperature with a slice of cold cheese poking out the side. Brown lettuce and a pink tomato. The two slices of bacon were no more than 2″ long. I reluctantly took a bite of it and nearly gagged. The manager saw my dilemma and offered a new, fresh sandwich and I quickly accepted his suggestion.

After waiting for a few minutes I was handed a new sandwich. The manger was curious if I would be satisfied. Now comes the horrible part that is completely not like me. I just told him it was fine.

It was not.

We rushed back to the office since this little venture took a lot longer than we anticipated. Starving, broke and annoyed, I ate the sandwich.

The roll was nice looking and felt fresh… that’s the only good quality that I can think of. The cheese was not melted, the lettuce was still brown and the tomato still pink. I slowly picked the thing apart to see what I was getting into. I know what to expect from the roast beef at Arby’s so I was not distracted by the fact that it was made of kangaroo. I’m really not sure what they did to it… but it looked like it had “grill flavor” sprinkled on it. It looked like it was scraped off of a hot griddle to give that “burger” effect.

The sandwich could have been decent but came up far short. I hope Arby’s can get their act together. I saw promise of some interesting menu items like the southwest eggrolls made famous by Chili’s and Fridays. I know I shouldn’t expect top quality product from any place that puts your food in a paper bag, but this was so disappointing. It looked like a good idea, but execution was completely off. I just kept thinking of the disgusted face that Gordon Ramsey would have made had he been forced to eat this mess.
